About Rebecca ~
Senior Center Director - West Hartford Senior Centers, Town of West Hartford
With over 35 years professional experience in senior health, senior living and senior recreation and engagement, Rebecca Sears has spent her entire professional career focused on the health and wellbeing of humans as they age.
Rebecca has been a Connecticut Certified Therapeutic Recreation Director since 1991. She was previously a Certified Dementia Practitioner. Rebecca has been a Certified Reiki Master Practitioner since 2010. She is also a Certified Park and Recreation Professional. Rebecca received her BS in Business Management from Bay Path College.
Her expertise includes recreation programming for independent seniors in the community as well as therapeutic recreation programming for seniors in clinical settings, assisted living and those with dementia.
Rebecca began her career working with seniors in long term care where she witnessed the full impact of poor diet, substance abuse, social isolation and untreated medical and psychological diagnoses as people age. She witnessed a lack of independence, privacy and dignity in institutional care in the 1990’s. At that point, patients were cared for by a medical model system that was focused on treatment, rather than preventative measures that addressed the mind, body and spirit on an individual. The goal to work in the clinical field quickly transitioned into a passion for purpose through engagement. Over her career she has worked in community relations, providing outreach and education to seniors in the community. Through this work, she found her life’s passion in Directing two senior centers in West Hartford, CT. In this setting she is creating space where retiring adults to 100+ year old seniors can care for their bodies through exercise and nutritional programs, stimulate their minds with intellectual programming and explore their purpose, value and connection to others.
